A long time ago, the easiest way to get out on the water was to construct a dugout canoe. Constructing a dugout canoe involved finding the right tree, cutting it down, and then whittling the seats down into the hull. The process was labor intensive, but it was worth it to gain the ability to roam the waterways. Today, the process is much easier. All you need is one of the top inflatable fishing boats from this Intex Mariner 4 review. With these inflatable fishing boats, there is no carpentry involved—just a little inflation time.

You have undoubtedly heard of the Intex Mariner 4. It is not only one of the most trusted models in inflatable fishing boats, but it is also one of the most touted online. However, we know just how easily false advertising can take off on the web. We wanted to put the claims to the test in our Intex Mariner 4 review.

To do this, we first scoured the internet for inflatable fishing boats. We found so many of them we quickly had to find a way to let the cream rise to the top. We narrowed down our list by eliminating those products that sported primarily negative reviews and by cutting out items that asked too high of a price for what they offered. With our list narrowed down, we put each item through our Intex Mariner 4 review rubric. This gave us a clear idea of where the Intex Mariner 4 excels and where its specs are more par for the course among its competition.

What Is the Intex Mariner 4?

Let us start with this review’s featured inflatable boat. Technically listed as the “Intex Mariner 4, 4-Person Inflatable Boat Set with Aluminum Oars and High Output Air Pump,” this boat offers excellent navigability and durability.

Accidentally popping your boat is a major concern for those looking to buy an item from this Intex Mariner 4 review. Luckily, this model is constructed of Super Tough PVC, a material that uses three separate layers to enhance durability. The two outer layers comprise heavy-gauge PVC, and the inner layer is a polyester mesh that aids reinforcement, so you never have to worry about popping your ride.

We loved that the design included a keel rock guard that helped the stability of the craft. The two Boston valves made inflating and deflating this model a breeze. We evaluated the inflation and deflation time of many vehicles in this Intex Mariner 4 review, so it always relieved us when one did not take an exorbitant amount of time. Ultimately, the boat you like most will be the one that demands the least from you in terms of setup and put-away.

The gear pouch and dedicated fishing rod holders just beg you to take this vehicle out on an epic fishing trip. There are even motor mount fittings and a pouch for a battery that allow you to add your own trolling motor to this boat. When you buy this boat, you also receive two 54-inch aluminum oars plus a high-output pump to aid in the inflation and deflation process.

Product Specs

The Intex Mariner 4 is a gray Super Tough PVC inflatable fishing boat with a maximum seating capacity of four adults. Its Super Tough PVC structure is UV-resistant and durable against impact and abrasion thanks to its multiple layering and strong molecular structure. The design uses four Boston valves so you can quickly fill and deflate your vehicle. You can inflate the keel for more control and better handling.

At a maximum, the Intex Mariner 4 can hold up to 880 pounds. When fully inflated, it measures 129 by 57 by 19 feet. The complete package comes with seats that can be inflated, a repair patch kit, two 54-inch deluxe aluminum oars, and a high-output hand pump.

The Intex Mariner 4 Review

Performance

Being able to inflate the keel added a lot of maneuverability to this watercraft. Whether you are using the aluminum paddles to propel yourself over the water or if you are relying on a trolling motor, this boat glides smoothly. The triple layering that makes up this boat’s hull is excellent for avoiding punctures and gives the entire boat a great amount of steerage.

Comfort

We found the inflatable chairs to be comfortable. Our rides were smooth whether we were paddling or trolling with a motor. That we could kick back and let the fishing rod holders do the work was a great bonus to the overall comfort level. This is among the most roomy inflatable boats that we got our hands on. We could easily pack in a crew of four and not feel like we were overloading the boat.

Even with a full crew, our elbows and knees were given plenty of space and nobody was knocking into anyone else, even when the waves started rocking the boat. We were hard-pressed to find a more comfortable competitor in the entire Intex Mariner 4 review process.

Design Quality

The overall design quality is just about as high as you can get for an inflatable boat that holds four people without exceeding a tight budget. Not everyone will love the grey design, but it is attractive enough, even if it is not particularly eye-catching. In terms of durability, you will not find a longer-lasting inflatable boat for the price. Down to the molecular level, the plastic is designed to last a long time. Fortunately, the folks at Intex take no risks when it comes to providing an aquatic vehicle that can risk being popped.

They provide patch kits in case things get rough, but we found that we were never in a position to need them. We were given extra peace of mind by these kits, however. Even greater peace of mind was granted by the certifications from the National Marine Manufacturer’s Association (NMMA) and the U.S. Coast Guard that the Intex Mariner 4 boasts.

The Intex company ensures that their buyers have a limited 30-day manufacturer’s warranty against defects in materials and workmanship. This is not the best warranty we found in our Intex Mariner 4 review process, but it guarantees you will not be shipped a shoddy product.

HydroForce Marine Pro Inflatable Raft

Of all the models we reviewed for our Intex Mariner 4 review, the HydroForce Marine Pro Inflatable Raft looks the most like something a Star Wars stormtrooper would use. The sleek white design is pleasing to the eye. Regarding carrying capacity, this item is on the low end of our Intex Mariner 4 review.

The HydroForce Marine Pro Inflatable Raft can only really float a maximum of about 590 pounds. This will float an adult and a child, but it is not ideal for large parties of adults. The hull is made of extra-strength vinyl that has been reinforced three times. So despite it being smaller than the Intex Mariner 4, the HydroForce Marine Pro is just as durable in resisting pops and abrasion.

The HydroForce Marine Pro Inflatable Raft package comes with two 60-inch aluminum oars, a 14.5-inch air pump, and a bag to store all of it.

Performance

Although it handled well and resisted punctures easily, we found that it could not turn as well as the Intex Mariner 4. However, the omnidirectional oar-locks kept our paddles in the right place without feeling constraining. Overall, the HydroForce Marine Pro gave us a nice ride.

Comfort

We quite enjoyed the comfort provided by this model. With only one or two passengers, it is a perfectly suitable water vehicle. However, it is less comfortable when you attempt to squeeze three people inside.

Design Quality

The sleek white look is just downright pretty. We loved the triple-reinforced hull. The additional mounts for motors and oars are in all the right places for high functionality.

AIRHEAD Angler Bay Inflatable Boat

AIRHEAD ANGLER BAY Inflatable Boat, 6 person

Buy on Amazon

Whereas the previous two boats in our Intex Mariner 4 review are all business in the way they look, the AIRHEAD Angler Bay Inflatable Boat’s shouts “relaxation” in each part of its design. Just one look at this six-person fishing boat and you know you’re in for a good time. Not only are the seats comfortable, but fishing rod holders and drink holders are built in.

There is a philosophy that states, “It ain’t really fishing if I ain’t got a beer,” and AIRHEAD Angler Bay Inflatable Boat fully embraces that school of thought. This boat comes with an inflatable floor and seats that can be moved. It is made of heavy-duty vinyl with seams that are welded together electronically.

Performance

This is the ultimate inflatable boat for partying and fishing simultaneously. In terms of sharp turns, the AIRHEAD boat does not perform as well as some other boats in this Intex Mariner 4 review.

Comfort

Except for the Intex Mariner 4, no other boat was more comfortable than the AIRHEAD Angler Bay Inflatable Boat.

Design Quality

It does not look as high quality as other entries in this Intex Mariner 4 review, but its design screams “fun.” The design quality is solid.

  • Includes an inflatable floor and a movable seat
  • Constructed of heavy duty vinyl with electronically welded seams

This boat comes with a ninety-day warranty.

  • Not the most maneuverable
  • Looks more “fun” than functional

Solstice by Swimline Voyager 6-Person Boat

Solstice by Swimline Voyager 6-Person Boat

Buy on Amazon

No Intex Mariner 4 review would be complete without a comparison to the Solstice by Swimline Voyager 6-Person Boat. Not only can this boat hold more people than the Intex Mariner 4, but it is also about a hundred dollars cheaper. For that price, you get an inflatable boat with a four-chamber double hull, heavy-duty PVC construction, and movable seats. What do you sacrifice? Quality, performance, and looks.

Performance

Although it stayed afloat well, it was difficult to steer with control and accuracy.

Comfort

There’s a lot of room on this boat; however, its material is not the nicest to the touch.

Design Quality

You get what you pay for with the Solstice by Swimline Voyager 6-Person Boat. Expect at least one encounter that requires a patching kit.

Solstice by Swimline Voyager 6-Person Boat
  • Heavy duty PVC construction
  • Multi person capacity.Capacity:1150lbs
  • 4 chamber, double hull (DIN chamber) construction

Warranty

Swimline does not offer an explicit warranty on their Solstice Voyager 6-Person Boat.

Pros

  • The cheapest option in our review
  • Holds many people at once
  • Heavy-duty PVC construction

Cons

  • No warranty
  • Not the smoothest ride

Conclusion

In the end, there was no challenger that could out-compete the Intex Mariner 4. As we conducted this review, we thought inflation and deflation times would be the major determiner of which boat was best. However, as we got them out to the water, a clear winner emerged. The Intex Mariner 4 performs better than its competition and it does not ask an unreasonable price. We hope to see you out on the water soon!
