Boat Steering Wheels Comparison Table

Product FAQ

1. What is a Boat Steering Wheel?

A boat steering wheel is much like the one we have on our vehicles that travel on land, except the ones on boats turn the rudder or motor on the boat which makes you move in a certain direction.

2. What Does a Boat Steering Wheel Do?

A boat steering wheel exists to let us choose the direction we want our boat to go by adjusting the rudder or motor in the direction we turn the wheel.

3. How Does a Boat Steering Wheel Work?

If you have a boat that has a rudder and no engine, then it works by turning the rudder in the direction that you would like to head to, and the wind or water pushes your boat in that direction. For boats with an engine, it is much easier, because it turns the engine toward where you would like to go, and the engine pushes the boat there with its own power.

4. Where Can You Buy a Boat Steering Wheel?

You can find boat steering wheels online on Amazon most commonly, or if there are any stores near you that provide boating equipment, then you can find one there that will fit your needs. If purchasing a wheel in a store, there may be someone knowledgeable on staff that can help direct you to what you should purchase for your boat.

How We Reviewed

We scoured online for several new boat steering wheels that people were talking about so we could gain a deeper understanding. We then purchased them and installed them onto a boat. We did this to not only provide you with information on the best products but also to ensure that you were getting our unbiased examination of these wheels. We based our review on the features each has, their pros and cons, the price for each wheel, where to buy them, and last but not least, we took a look at the warranty information for each steering wheel.

Overall Price Range of This Product

The boat steering wheels we reviewed cost anywhere from around $35 to about $190. The cheapest of the boat steering wheels has nothing particularly fancy about it and is made mostly of metal which can be hard to grip when your hands are wet, while the more expensive models have a specialized grip so you can continue using it should your hands get wet, which is common on a boat.

1. Pactrade Marine Boat Stainless Steel Five Spoke Steering Wheel with Bakelite Cap

Features

This is one of the cheapest models of boat steering wheels. It is composed almost entirely of stainless steel which allows it to resist some harsh conditions you may meet while out on the water. Another thing worth noting about this wheel is that although we lost our grip on it when our hands were wet, the spokes on it allowed us to remain in control of the boat.

PROS

  • Stainless steel
  • Cheap
  • Spokes are placed in good positions

CONS

  • Hard to keep a grip on it when wet
  • Stainless steel does not match many boats’ looks
  • Sometimes the wood cap in the center will pop off; gluing it fixes problem

Warranty

The warranty for this wasn’t too stellar, but given the cheap cost of this wheel, it is understandable that the warranty is not all-encompassing since it is easy enough to just purchase a new model should you enjoy this one.

2. Amarine Destroyer Steering Wheel

Features

This wheel is much like the other one since it is comprised mostly of stainless steel so that any weather you encounter won’t negatively affect the wheel. The largest difference between them, however, is that this one has a knob on it, and the center is not made out of wood, but rather out of plastic.

PROS

  • Stainless steel
  • Knob added for more precise control
  • Cheap

CONS

  • Hard to keep a grip on when wet
  • Stainless steel does not match many boats’ looks
  • The grip on the underside felt uncomfortable to us

Warranty

Similar to the last wheel, this steering wheel’s warranty isn’t spectacular considering its cheap price.

3. X-Haibei 13-1/2″ Destroyer Style 5 Spoke Steering Wheel Stainless Steel

Features

When we first looked at this wheel, we noticed that it looks like someone took the first two wheels we reviewed and combined them together appearance-wise, but something interesting that we noticed was that they made this wheel out of a different stainless steel called 304 stainless steel. 304 stainless steel is designed to be more durable than normal stainless steel.

PROS

  • Made of 304 stainless steel
  • Simple to figure out
  • Excellent for large boats like a pontoon boat

CONS

  • Does not match most boats’ styles
  • Easy to lose grip on the metal
  • Does not seem creative after seeing the last two wheels

Warranty

Like the others we have reviewed so far, due to its cheap price, this wheel does not feature a warranty that encompasses very much, but it is affordable to replace should any issues arise.

4. Teflex Ace Steering Wheel

No products found.

Features

After seeing the previous stainless steel steering wheels, it felt off for us to see a plastic one, and our first thought was that it looked like it belonged on a car and appeared cheap. Unlike the stainless steel ones, however, this still maintained some grip if handled with wet hands, which is helpful for preventing any accidents from happening while out on the water.

PROS

  • Better grip than stainless steel
  • Cheap
  • Corrosion and UV resistant

CONS

  • More expensive than some stainless steel wheels
  • Does not look like it belongs on a boat
  • Feels cheap

Warranty

Due to the cheap price of the wheel, the warranty for it is lacking.

5. HA Motorsports Wooden Boat Steering Wheel

Features

This is the first wheel that we reviewed on this list made of wood, and it looks great. If the spokes weren’t made of metal, then it would have a great classic look about it, but it is important to have the metal so the wheel is more durable. We also felt it accompanied the style of many more boats than the other models so far. The downside to this wheel is that due to how it’s made, it’s quite slick when handling it while wet.

PROS

  • Looks great
  • Durable
  • Not adversely affected by salt or lake water

CONS

  • One of the more expensive wheels on the list
  • Is slick when wet
  • Spokes take away from old feeling the wood gives

Warranty

Since this is a more expensive wheel, its warranty covers some parts should any problems arise while you are using it for a time.

6. SeaStar SW59291P Champion Wheel

Features

This is another wheel we felt looked like the steering wheel of a car when we were using it. This one also looks and feels cheap like the last one as it is made of plastic. However, unlike the last plastic wheel, this one has a medallion in the center that doesn’t seem to do anything other than look good.

PROS

  • Durable
  • Comfortable to use
  • Resistant to water and UV rays

CONS

  • Feels cheap
  • Does not fit the look of many boats
  • Can get slippery if handled when wet

Warranty

Since this wheel is one of the cheaper ones, its warranty doesn’t offer much.

7. Forever Sharp Burlwood Wheel

Features

When we were using this wheel, we were impressed by how fancy it looked; it looked like a top-of-the-line steering wheel for a surprisingly low cost compared to some of the others on the list. It also felt very comfortable for us to use after we installed it on the boat. We could keep our grip on it while it was wet.

PROS

  • Looks amazing
  • Grip holds well
  • Cheap

CONS

  • Screws rusted after being covered by water
  • Plastic separates easily

Warranty

The warranty for this steering wheel covers some parts.

8. Attwood Marine 8315-4 Soft Grip

Features

This was another wheel that looked like a vehicle’s steering wheel, but it doesn’t look cheap when considering the price. Similarly to the other plastic steering wheels, this one is very resistant to water, which will give it a good life on your boat.

PROS

  • Looks heavy duty
  • Cheap
  • Water resistant

CONS

  • Does not match many boats
  • Hard to grip when wet
  • Center cover is hard to keep on

Warranty

This wheel does not have a good warranty due to being so cheap.

9. Pactrade Marine 5 Spoke Steering Wheel with Turning Knob

Features

This is the second wheel on this list that has a turning knob, and this one is made almost entirely out of stainless steel, save for the cap which is made out of plastic. It looks amazing despite being made of only stainless steel.

PROS

  • Turning knob helps with more precise movements
  • Resistant to various conditions
  • Decent cost

CONS

  • Hard to grip when wet
  • Some may not like its stainless steel look
  • Does not go down all the way on some shafts

Warranty

The warranty does not seem to cover much, like many of the cheaper models, which disappointed us slightly since it is a model that costs more than many other wheels.

10. Schmitt & Ongaro Marine Evo Pro 316

Features

This wheel looks best out of the bunch, making it worth the high price. Though it doesn’t just look nice like some other wheels do, but is also very durable as it is made of stainless steel. It also features material that looks and feels like leather that doesn’t suffer in the water. It also has a high quality control knob that allows you to have precise control over your movements.

PROS

  • Best looking wheel
  • Feels amazing
  • Durable
  • Best grip of all wheels

CONS

  • Most expensive wheel
  • Some may not like the look of it

Warranty

This wheel has a lifetime warranty which is nice considering it is the most expensive wheel we reviewed.

The Verdict

Based on all these wheels, if you can afford it, you should definitely get the Schmitt & Ongaro Marine Evo Pro 316 boat steering wheel due to it having the best feeling, look, grip, and durability. Add in the fact that it includes a lifetime warranty, and this wheel becomes even more appealing to anyone whether they are new or a veteran to boating.
